short stories – Uno strano pontile (A weird pier)

Hello!

I love sea, you know!

There’s a place close to Lucca, Lido di Camaiore, with a brand new (and weird) pier, that stands like a giant arm, lying down over the sea.

The “tail” of this pier is built with large mirrors (2/3 m. tall): reflections, reflections ….

Una delle cose positive di Lucca è la sua posizione: a metà strada da Firenze e il mare.

Io amo il mare…

Ecco quindi che appena possiamo ci trasferiamo sulla costa e passiamo il nostro tempo sulla spiaggia con la simpatica truppa tutta intenta a fare casino.

Nelle ultime peregrinazioni ho trovato presso Lido di Camaiore (Lucca) un luogo (se si può chiamare così) davvero suggestivo: un pontile artificiale (link all’articolo sull’inaugurazione) che dalla costa si “lancia” verso il mare come un braccio di un gigante che si riposa sulla spiaggia.

La cosa più bella si scopre quando si passeggia e si arriva in fondo al pontile: la struttura finale infatti è composta da una specie di “visiera” con specchi alti anche 2/3 metri, che riflettono il panorama del mare e della costa in un continuo gioco di rimandi visivi.

Insomma, per uno come me, che ama i giochi dei riflessi, il pontile è una vera figata!

Ecco allora una mia interpretazione del pontile, anche se capirete ben poco della sua struttura.

Now I’ve started a new work about Lucca , or better said, about Catholic Church in Lucca: year after year the number of priests is decreasing drastically, as well as the number of who are faithful to God.

So, I’ve begun to look around trying to make a story about it.

Lucca should be the right place, as it’s called “the city of 99 churches”.

Dopo un pò di tempo che non ci sente ho deciso di pubblicare la prima puntata (spero!) di un nuovo soggetto che ho deciso di intraprendere.

Tutto è iniziato come lavoro fatto per il workshop di Canon Acadamy 2008 (13-14-15 giugno 2008 a Lucca).

Al solito i docenti (Annunzi e Colla) hanno dato dei temi, interessanti ma che vi risparmio, vi dico solo quelo che ho scelto: “Mistiche atmosfere, una città raccontata tramite i suoi elementi religiosi”.

Tema apparentemente facile, visto che Lucca viene anche definita la “città dalle 99 chiese”, e questo dice tutto.

Forse per il fatto che non amo molto la Chiesa (mi reputo credente, ma poco praticante) ho “rivisto” il tema, e ho cercato di descrivere la crisi che la Chiesa Cattolica sta attraversando, sia dal punto di vista del numero dei fedeli che delle vocazioni.

Nel mondo è ancora in calo il numero dei religiosi, maschi e femmine: secondo i dati dell’Ufficio centrale di statistica della Chiesa, pubblicati dall’Osservatore romano, il dato complessivo registra una diminuzione di quasi 95mila unità dal 2005 al 2006.

Credenti ma poco praticanti. La percentuale, infatti, si abbassa decisamente al 36,8% per coloro che vanno a messa la domenica. Particolarmente significativi i dati relativi all’etica familiare. Oltre i 2/3 degli italiani sono favorevoli ai Pacs e difendono la legge sul divorzio. Secondo una inchiesta realizzata da “Il Mulino” nel dicembre del 2006, sugli italiani che si dicono genericamente cattolici (circa l’80%) i praticanti si fermano al 17% dei credenti. [cfr. slide show – Villa Ginori – Massarosa (Lucca)

New post about another awesome place in the province of Lucca.
It’s a villa in front of the lake of Massaciuccoli.

The villa Ginori-Lisci in the zone “La Piaggetta”, was restored at the end of the last century: its structure and details, in that Tuscan neo-Gothic style so much liked by Puccini, evoke the characters of the surrounding countryside. The villa was much visited by the composer even in after years, above all for the affection he bore Bianca Maria, daughter of Carlo and Anna, whom he had seen as a child and whom he considered to have a refined musical judgement (he would often ask her opinion on his latest operas and never failed to get her tickets for various theatres).

Villa Ginori è fra le più belle residenze storiche presenti sul territorio lucchese. Fu acquistata nel 1887 dal marchese Carlo Ginori Lisci che la trasformò ben presto in circolo culturale di campagna, tra i cui assidui frequentatori ci fu anche il maestro Giacomo Puccini.
Villa Ginori deve gran parte della sua fama tanto ai richiami esotici della sua architettura che al suo romantico imbarcadero e al giardino semitropicale dove si trova un raro assortimento di piante e palme provenienti dall’Oriente, dai Tropici e dal Sud America .
Adiacente alla villa c’è l’imbarcadero dalla cui darsena partivano i barchini diretti verso i fossi e il lago di Massaciuccoli.

Grazie alla passione sempre viva per la caccia sul lago Puccini aveva istaurato un rapporto di amicizia molto profondo con il marchese Carlo Ginori-Lisci, proprietario della villa omonima alla Piaggetta. Il rosso paramento e i profili polilobati delle aperture in stile ‘toscano neogotico’, che caratterizzavano l’edificio, furono così graditi a Puccini da sceglierli per le ville di Chiatri e poi di Viareggio. La villa Ginori-Lisci fu molto frequentata dal compositore anche più avanti, soprattutto per l’affetto che lo legò a Bianca Maria, figlia di Carlo, che aveva visto bambina e che riteneva una raffinata intenditrice di musica.

This time I made a small slide show about pollution and rubbish, even in a nice town full of art and monuments.

This winter in Lucca the air quality was very bad, with a high level of PM₁₀

Do you know what does PM₁₀ mean?

PM₁₀ is a mixture of materials that can include smoke, soot, dust, salts, acids, and metals. Particulate matter also forms when gases emitted from motor vehicles and industry undergoes chemical reactions in the atmosphere.

How air pollution affects the human body?
When you breathe in suspended particulate matter in it can attack and inflame your tissues all the way down the respiratory tract. Because these particles are so small, they can go deep inside your lungs and damage the smallest airways called bronchioles.
As the particles approach the cells lining the lungs, they are attacked by macrophages, part of the lungs’ defense system. In turn, the macrophages trigger the release of inflammatory cells from the bone marrow. In some instances, toxic particles can destroy macrophages. Some particles make it all the way into the cells lining the lung, causing further inflammation that can hinder breathing.
Particles may also enter the bloodstream. Together with inflammatory mediators, they cause serious effects on the nervous system, as well as the heart and lungs.
Air pollution has the greatest effect on children, the elderly and those with respiratory and heart problems. Here is what air pollution can do to our health:

• Increase and aggravate asthma
• Create disease in the airways of children
• Increase respiratory illness in children
• Damage the lungs
• Increase deaths from respiratory and cardiovascular disease
• Increase hospital admissions for lung and heart disease
• Cause chest pain and nausea
• Cause shortness of breath and (faster) laboured breathing
• Permanently change lung structure

Ok, I know Photoshop and its flexibility and unrivaled editing power.

Starting from version 7 I’m used to edit my pictures with curves, layers, filters and so on, slight editing anyway (i. e. brightness, contrast, B&W conversion).

I know a clever girl, Alessandra (aka AleZ), who is able to drive Photoshop in a very smooth and effective way.

Let me introduce a sample of her capability: a stunning b&w calla…

Here is her explanation (sorry, in Italian): “Avevo fotografato una calla con una compatta digitale assolutamente non sofisticata, con una luce pessima. La foto quindi non rispecchiava la realtà. Attraverso Photoshop ho valorizzato l’idea teorica della calla (tutto bianco, pistillo giallo, coda verde). Riportando per assurdo l’immagine molto più vicino alla realtà rispetto alla foto digitale originaria, foto digitale che per definizione è di per se un’approssimazione. E la cosa interessante secondo me è che io non ho colorato la foto, ma ho solo scoperto il colore originario di alcuni punti. Quello che voglio dire è che non sono una fanatica di Photoshop, tutt’altro. Non mi piace trasformare una foto che anzi ha valore proprio per l’attimo irripetibile che ritrae. Dico solo che a volte Photoshop può servire per valorizzare l’idea che ci sta dietro.”

Here I am again.

This new post is about a famous city near Lucca: Viareggio.

[from Wikipedia] Viareggio (which means “way of the kings”) is a city located in northern Tuscany, on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. With a population of over 63,000 it is the main centre of the norther Tuscan Riviera known as Versilia, and the second largest city within the Province of Lucca.

It is known as a seaside resort as well as being the home of the famous carnival of Viareggio (dating back to 1873), and its papier-mâché floats, which (since 1925), parade along the promenade known as “Passeggiata a mare”, in the weeks preceding Easter.

On summer Viareggio is a crowded, noisy and chaotic place: so this march I decided to take pictures in a windy and cold day.
